ぐるぐるコンポストチェアは、回転式コンポストとチェアが一体となった屋外家具である。コンポストは循環型社会への取り組みの1つとして注目される一方、衛生面のイメージから人目につかない場所に置かれることが多い。そこで「腰かけた椅子が実はコンポストだった」という出会いの偶然性、そして遊具のように回す動作の楽しさによって、コンポストがより身近な存在になることを目指した。
座面の蓋を開けて土と生ゴミを入れ、微生物の力で栄養豊富な土をつくることができる。ハンドルを回して発酵を促す仕組みや、中の様子の変化を観察できる窓を備えている。コンポスト部分は普段は固定されて椅子となっているが、ロックボルトを外せば回転する。窓を上にして固定し、日光を取り込むことで分解を早めることも可能だ。発酵後の土は、園芸シートを敷き椅子を回して取り出す。回転部にはベアリングを仕込み、子どもでも軽く回せる仕様とした。材料にはメンテナンス性に優れるステンレスと人工木材を採用。内部にはスタイロフォームに不織布を巻きつけた断熱パネルを取り付け、通気性と断熱性を両立している。

“Gurguru Compost Chair” is outdoor furniture that integrates a rotating compost bin with a chair. While composting is gaining attention as part of efforts toward a circular society, it is often placed out of sight due to hygiene concerns. This design aims to make composting more approachable through the serendipity of discovering “the chair you sat on was actually a compost bin” and the playful enjoyment of turning it like a toy.
Open the seat lid to add soil and food scraps, allowing microorganisms to create nutrient-rich soil. It features a mechanism where turning the handle promotes fermentation and a window to observe the changes inside. The compost section is normally fixed as a chair, but it rotates when the lock bolt is removed. It can also be fixed with the window facing up to let in sunlight, accelerating decomposition. After fermentation, the soil is retrieved by laying down a gardening sheet and rotating the chair. Bearings are installed in the rotating section, allowing even children to turn it easily. Materials include stainless steel and artificial wood for excellent maintainability. Inside, insulation panels made of Styrofoam wrapped in non-woven fabric are attached, balancing ventilation and insulation.
